Buzzing Bee Philosophy

Music is an innate part of life, and should be accessible to all! Buzzing Bee Music Therapy strives to create an environment in which music can be just that. Whether used for personal coping, regulation, relaxation, expression, or learning, music can be a useful tool for individuals to refer to in their lives.

Although Music Therapy and Lessons are separate services, goals are developed for both, to meet the personal needs of each client or student. This includes:

  • the pace at which a session or lesson takes place
  • the music that is chosen
  • the expectations of the client or student
  • the interactions between client and therapist or teacher and student.

Buzzing Bee Music Therapy believes in a humanistic and self-actualized practice, in which each individual is considered capable of exploring and understanding their potential. It is the duty of the music therapist and teacher to guide the individual (through musical facilitation and exploration) towards specific, realistic and achievable goals.

Because music is such a natural phenomenon, Buzzing Bee Music Therapy believes that both Music Therapy and lessons should primarily be an enjoyable experience! Individual participants will be challenged and encouraged to take risks, always in a manner that supports the individual’s personal desire to succeed.

Ultimately, it is the goal of Buzzing Bee Music Therapy to have each individual complete sessions or lessons with an overall excitement for music and a set of skills that can be applied to other aspects of their life.

Music Therapy

Music therapy is a practice in which a credentialed professional uses music to intentionally facilitate and support the growth, well being and development of an individual. A therapeutic relationship is initially established to develop trust between the client and therapist. After this rapport is built, specific needs- that fall under emotional, spiritual, cognitive, social and musical domains- can be met. Music Therapy strives to address personal goals in a humanistic and client-centered manner.

  • Music Therapy can be beneficial for people of all ages and abilities! Sessions are offered in group or individual settings and will address a number of diverse goals. Activities can include but are not limited to –

    • Instrumental Exploration and Musical Improvisation
    • Musical listening
    • Songwriting
    • Lyric Analysis
    • Musical learning
    • Movement and music

Each activity is designed specifically to meet the group or individual needs; to facilitate growth, expression, and development.

During the initial sessions, the therapist will conduct a thorough assessment and will assist in outlining personal goals and objectives for the clients. Flexibility, which caters to the spontaneity of the experience, is a key aspect of music therapy and a core value of Buzzing Bee Music Therapy. Therefore, as the sessions progress, changes will be documented and shared with the client and their respective relations. Music therapy is unique to the participant or group and can help prepare an individual for long-term success.

Music Lessons

Music lessons provide an educational experience in which a student will learn how to read, write and play music. They provide the basic foundation for musical understanding and help a student to develop the skills for musical and theoretical application, appreciation and composition. Music Lessons are offered through Buzzing Bee Music Therapy on an individual basis only, and are hosted out of the student’s home.

  • Lessons run in correlation with the Vancouver School Board district calendar: starting in September, until the end of June. Lessons are offered to those with little to no musical background and continue to an intermediate level. Adapted lessons are also available for students with disabilities.

    Lesson options are as follows:

    • Beginner, Basic and Intermediate piano
    • Beginner and Basic theory
    • Beginner and Basic Guitar
    • Beginner and Basic voice
    • Beginner and Basic ukulele

Lessons are taught at a pace in which the student can absorb and enjoy the learning experience. Both instructional books are used, as well as personally arranged pieces that are of the student’s interest. Before regular lessons commence, an initial assessment will occur to determine the student’s availability and skill level.
